National Apprenticeship Week 2019 – Luis
Here at projectfive, we strongly believe in nurturing talent and as such, hiring apprentices has been an important part of our recruitment strategy for the last 9 years.
Investing in young talent means we can nurture them develop them in line with our core values, which ultimately means we have a young, talented and better qualified team – who are a lot of fun to be around!
As it’s National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to one of our apprentices, Luis, to find out why he chose that path.
Luis Scandone, Apprentice Systems Administrator
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I always wanted to do IT but didn’t have enough knowledge and experience to go straight into an IT job. So an apprenticeship was the perfect way to gain experience, learn new things, meet people in the industry and earn money while I did so.
What have you got out of being in the workplace and learning at the same time?
I have gained experience of what it’s like working in an IT team, and have gained more communication skills, working with and talking to customers. I have also gained commercial awareness and have a better understanding of how things work within an IT organisation. I also now have hands-on experience of working on customers’ servers and workstations; monitoring and maintaining them.
What would you say to anyone who’s thinking of doing an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a perfect way of starting a career in the industry you want to be in. You gain valuable, hands-on experience, meet other people in the industry and get to earn while you do all that!
